This holiday season, or any season, when you need to bring out the tuxedo, don't be afraid or confused on what to do. Whenever you display confidence with any outfit, you will look far more ravishing! When you wear your tuxedo, keep it cool, classic and crisp.

Here are three excellent tips that will help you master the tuxedo:

1. White shirts please. Formal wear always calls for a white shirt. We have seen for a short period, during the 90's, that the black shirt, black tie and black tux ensemble on the red carpet. However, a white tuxedo shirt is much more elegant for the occasion.

2. Ditch the cummerbund. The cummerbund is so 1970's. The perfect look for the modern gentleman is a full backed vest or show off your style with bold suspenders. The vest is the new classic for the tuxedo, but opt for a full vest. Do not wear the one that just clips around your neck and waste though, its too elementary. Suspenders are for the more edgy gent. Opt for suspenders to show a little more unique style.

3. Show some cuff. Cuff links that is! When wearing a tuxedo, cuff links are more appropriate. If you don't wear them often, this is the perfect time to take them out of the velvet case they stay in. Also, when wearing a tuxedo, more of your shirt sleeve should show beyond your coat sleeve. Rather than the normal quarter inch, a half to three-quarter inch is a bit more fancy.

Master the tuxedo gentleman! Wear it with confidence & class and you will be far ahead to other fellow's with the so called cool. And that's when you're living Life...With Style!

Yours truly,

Ferrera Fresh Tip: Real men wear pink with confidence, and ladies love it...

This October 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. Although the issue is one that we should be cognizant of all year
round, October is the month that breast cancer awareness is given special
recognition and attend.

Since it's fall, the way you add pink into your wardrobe is by mixing it
with other fall colors. Gentlemen, grab your brown suit and accent it
with a pink shirt and a brown tie. Or, a tan brown suit with a pink tie
and pocket square. Pink is a Spring color, but for the month of October
there is an exception, so rock the pink with confidence fellas!

For ladies, well this is easy, this is really your color so wear it as
you wish. I will however share with you the signs and energy you give off
when you wear pink. Pink is a very welcoming and positive color. Bright
pink says to others you are very energetic and outgoing. While soft
pink is very peaceful and assuring, making you very welcoming to talk to
and approach.

With that in mind ladies and gents, in your "Life...with Style,"
consciously add pink to your wardrobe this month to show your support
for females around the world that are fighting with, planning to prevent
and those who have concurred breast cancer. Breast cancer is a serious
issue that is being answered with vast amounts of time and resources
devoted to finding cures and enhancements to this disease. Find out more
at National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, www.nbcam.org

Enjoy October...in PINK!

Yours truly,

Ferrera Fresh Tip: GENTS... spontaneous dates with her will make her smile and keep her on her toes...

Well today, September 29th is National Coffee Day and many places are offering free or discounted cups of Joe to all visitors. (Check them out here) With that in mind gents, why not have a simple spontaneous date with that lady you're interested in. In addition, it's the perfect excuse to see her again and you can get to know more about her over some delicious coffee.

Try this: Call her in the middle of the day and say "Would you like to celebrate with me today? It's National Coffee Day and it would be great for us to get together for lunch or after work. What's a good time for you?"

Even if she does not answer, leave a pleasant message that will make her smile, and at least you will stay on her mind all day. Remember, this date idea is able to be used all year 'round! That's Ferrera Fresh in a "Life...with Style!" A text message can work too, but be creative in your wording and no typos.

Have at it gentlemen, and remember it's the simple things in life that make her smile. You do not always need to buy fancy gifts or watches, what she really wants is your time.

Happy National Coffee Day!
Wow, it is the fall season already!

If you're a regular viewer of our blog, you know it’s time to revisit the upcoming fall trends of 2011.

Interestingly, some things we have forecast are now coming to the forefront. We've mentioned in previous blog about the boldness of orange and yellow sticking around for a while. To read the old blog for the Fall 2010 trends, (or click here). In addition, after attending MAGIC this season in August, the experience and info made it definitely true.

Gentlemen, continue to add orange and rust shades of orange inside of your wardrobe. Great ways to do this are with neckties, shirts, socks and accessories.

Ladies the same applies as well and I believe accessories will be a great way to do this. Some great examples of the use of orange and rust colors are like in scarves, earrings, necklaces, bracelets as well as pants for the fall season.

In addition to the orange color, another color that stands out is going to be somewhat of a mustard yellow-ish color. Some other colors on the horizon for fall arts fans are neutral colors. Neutral colors will blend great with the season and be compatible when matching pair with other things in your wardrobe.

In addition to color, one of the things that we start to see coming to the forefront for Fall 2011 and going into 2012 is 'layering'. Adding cardigans, light sweaters, vest and even turtle necks (yes, we see them in a lot of shows this season.) Layering is not uncommon, however, it is becoming more popular in Euro fashion shows.

We have recently seen scarves cardigans, shirts, jackets, gloves and so forth, add more bulk and weight; making it warmer for the cold seasons of fall and winter. I find it really classy that women do this quite often, but gentlemen, make sure to do this in your wardrobe for style, it is in!

The All White Party. Where did this phenomenon come from? Making for such a fashionable event, what made people decide to get together dressed in all white? Well arguably, the white party was not always a so called fashion event...

Sometime ago there was said to be a man named François Pasquier. While in Paris, he planned to meet with a few friends in the park, and the way they would identify one another, among the locals with ease, was that they would all be dressed in complete white.

After some people heard this captivating story, the all white theme became a popular way to identify certain people when meeting up as identification. As the theme grew, it evolved into a full out annual white dinner aka "Paris Dinner en Blanc" (officially in 1988), where people would meet up in a location that would be undisclosed until the day of the event. The attendees that have obtained the location would of course dress in all white, and they would bring a few family members and friends along with personal baskets of food, wine, and light entertainment. At the Paris Dinner en Blanc, the attendees would meet others and fellowship throughout the night.

When I think about the concept I ponder: “Hmmm, what a fun concept that just evolve into something amazing!” The excitement and anticipation of an undisclosed welcoming location, where you can have enjoyment among people you know and do not know, seems gratifying when some of the history is known.

Although no one really knows the exact orientation, meaning, or details behind the white party; today it exists as a fashionable phenomenon, even though it was not intended to be so.

That's "Life with...Style!"

Yours truly,
She will rather wait until you finish chewing in order to hear you more clearly. Ask her questions when you see she is not eating or drinking. A good time to ask questions is when she has just finished chewing, not while she is chewing or has just put food in her mouth. Now while she is talking, you chew and eat, which will make for a great dining experience in which you enjoy great conversation while having a meal.

We all have heard the term "dressed to the nines" which refers to someone that is immaculately dressed. Well, this is actually a very old phrase which comes from the 1800's military era.

When suits were made for military men, master tailors would use more than enough fabric to create a top notch suit. Although a gentleman's suit could easily be made with 5-6 yards of fabric, the tailors would use a full "9 yards" of fabric to get a rich finished look. This is where we get the phrase "dressed to the nines." Over time, the phrase began to be used when referring to someone that is dress extremely well, even if their attire is not made with a complete nine yards of fabric.

Ferrera Fresh Tip: In a Life with Style, always dress to the nines! And now you know why...
After Returning from the MAGIC fashion this season, visiting seminars, booths and textile companies, there a few colors that are going to make a big impact the the upcoming 2011 Spring and seasons to come. One of those colors is Light Gray! Different from what we have seen in the past few seasons, of the darker charcoal color gray, the gray we now see from the major textile manufactures and style houses has a blast of white in it making it very light. Take a look at some of the shades of gray we will see in the up coming seasons.

No!

Well okay, Maybe!

While jeans have become very stylish and dressy, it is often asked: can you wear jeans as business casual? And the answers is: it depends! The etiquette and proper answer is that there is not a real definition of "business casual." And, if an event calls for business casual, it never calls for jeans to be worn in the given setting. However, Americans often choose to go against the grain for one reason or another so it is important to be aware of what to do in this situation.

To answer this question further I will offer a few things to consider and scenarios that could call for business casual attire. By considering these things when dressing business casual will allow you to always be appropriately dressed.

Know your industry. If you're in an industry that calls for you to wear a suit & tie more often than not, jeans are a No.

If jeans are apart of your profession such as denim design or fabric manufacturing, jeans may be Okay.

If the business casual event is held in an office or meeting space, jeans are a No.

If the business casual event is held in lounge or bar, jeans may be Okay.

If the business casual event is held in hotel lobby or space, jeans are a No.

If the business casual event is at a someone's home, jeans may be Okay.

If your business casual event is held in a golf club house or private club jeans are a No.

If the person your are attending with or who invited you is not wearing jeans, then No.

If you choose to wear jeans as business casual, always wear dark jeans with little or no washes. Darker than traditional blue jeans would be considered dark denim.

If you do choose to wear jeans as business casual, also wear a blazer and dress shoes so not to be considered casual.

The next time you or someone you know considers wearing jeans as business casual, consider the 10 tips above first and choose accordingly. Appropriate attire is much more valuable than stylish attire.

Ferrera Fresh Tip: GENTS Valentine's Day is usually one of the busiest dinner days of the year second only to Mother's Day! But this year it's on a Monday...

With that said make sure to plan your Valentines date ahead of time! To avoid the long waiting list or the awkward rush to finish the date in order to be ready for work the next day, here is a cool option. If you don't do it often and can, stay in and you cook for your Valentine's date that night.

So, pick up a nice bottle of wine, (get red wine mister, it's Valentine's) set the table, light a couple table candles and a few around the house, prepare a dinner that she will enjoy and let the Valentine's evening begin!

The way you finish the night is up to you, just make sure it's on a good note and that's Life...With Style!
If the conversation continues to more than just hello and small talk, you can mention that you have called and if she has received your message. You can even say it in a joking way to lighten up the awkward moment for both of you. Whatever response she has, show no emotion as if it did not bother you and carry on. We have all received invitations that finish with the fancy letters "R.S.V.P" but what does that really mean? You probably know that it means we are suppose to reply if we are coming to the event, but the abbreviation R.S.V.P. actually means Répondez S'il Vous Plaît which is French for "Please Respond."

The reason we see this phrase R.S.V.P. in the English language dating back to the late 18th Century is that many naturally adopted this French etiquette since it does sound fancy and it is a nice way to abbreviate the long phrase. Yes it all comes down to knowing that you have to reply in regards to your attendance to an event, but it sure is nice to know what the R.S.V.P. means on that next invitation you send out or receive.

Ahhh, yes the first date is always exciting for the simple fact that it is just New! However, the first date is your opportunity to display the gentleman that you are as well as observe and learn about the lady you are interested in. Listening and good conversation will make this date successful without a doubt but remember dates are to be fun and not feel like an "interview." Here are 6 tips that will avoid date disasters and will make your first dates successful!

Make sure to plan this date! It shows her that you take time and that she is important. There is no excuse not to plan the first date, period!

Know a little about the weather for your date and a little bit about the things she likes and does not like as it pertains to food, fun and entertainment.

There is no need for too much touching or being close on a first date. If it does happen let her initiate it. She may continually and subtly invite you to be closer to her with small touches, and other flirtatious signs. Just take note and keep your cool.

The first date should be a place where you can actually talk! Movies, operas or plays just don’t work since you have to be silent in these places. Having dinner, a glass of wine, visit a café or a lounge is more appropriate since you can interact in conversation.

Be very alert on the first date! Listen, respond, remember, take mental notes and know that all communication skills apply. Her body language and conversation will tell you whether this is the only date or if there will be other dates to follow.

Keep your cool and do not be too romantic on the first date! This might even make her want you more because it gives the impression that you are polite enough to respect her space which she will be attracted to! But, let her initiate romantic interaction and you respond as you desire...

One more tip for good measure which you regular readers know from other post which is, always dress your best! Put your skills in to play from the gentleman’s style blogs and carry on your "Life...With Style!"
Thank you for the continued views, blog reads and comments. I know there is a ton of valuable information here at "Life...With Style" by Michael Ferrera and we do our best to continue to provide you with useful information. Nonetheless, it's Thanksgiving week, a short work week, and another week to be thankful simply just for the gift of LIFE!

"With Style" as is in the title of the blog is an additive, a plus, a perk, a choice. But, the fact that we are able to have life in itself is enough for us all to be grateful and thankful all year around. In regards to the Style portion I encourage you to all add as part of life here are 3 Tips to make your Thanksgiving day more enjoyable:

1) Be on time! - This applies to both the host and the guest. If you are the one hosting Thanksgiving meal, make sure your food is prepared when your guest arrive and you are not still cooking! Your guest came to eat not to wait and eat. If you plan to have others cook with you, make sure they are aware of that and there are no surprises. As for the guest arriving to eat, please be on time especially if you are bringing a dish for others to eat. If there is a time set to eat, be respectful to that so that you do not hold up the party. If you know that you will be late because of other engagements, inform the host ahead of time.

2) Converse with Confidence! - Sometimes at holiday parties we are around family members we don't get to see regularly and the conversation can be awkward. I mean, you're technically family but this may be the first time you are meeting or haven't talked in years. The best way to avoid this awkward moment is to engage a third person or join into a conversation with the person you don't know and the person you do know while they are already talking. This gives you a common ground and possible introductions or backgrounds to be explained. After that, continue on talking to that person and get to know them. If you feel like you are the person that doesn't know many guest, you may need to mix & mingle a little more throughout the year. Use Facebook and Twitter to start building on relationships throughout the year!

3) Be Stylish in your Attire! - Yes, it is a holiday but that is not a day to take off your style! So on Thanksgiving day dress with style as your normally would. Do not hold back saying, " I don't want to slip on myself" or "maybe I'm too dressed up." It's cool, be yourself and you might even encourage others to step there style up or may want to direct them to this blog, "Life...With Style." ;) As you may know form reading other post the most important thing is style is being neat & organized! If you remember these two components at all times your jeans, shoes, hats, or whatever you put on will have more value in your attire.

Until next time, Happy Thanksgiving and as usual live Life with Style!

Yours truly,

With all the feedback & questions on the post "How to Choose a Collar Spread," I believe now the button down collar shirt deserves it's own mention! Before we go in to style tips, lets make it clear that there is no right or wrong in regards to button down collar shirts. The button down collar is a personal preference. If you like it wear it; if you don't, then don't.

When deciding on a button collar shirt or not, here are a few things to remember:

The purpose of button down collar shirts are to hold your collar in place.

When you are wearing a jacket, the lapel of the jacket should hold your shirt collar in place anyway.

Button collar shirts are better fit for casual business attire and when you are not wearing a tie.

Collar dress shirts without a button do give off a cleaner and more crisp image. Buttons distract from your stylish tie.

If your concern is that your collar slides under your jacket lapel, try using very heavy or even metal collar stays. If your shirt does not have collar stay pockets, you can have them added in by your cleaners.

Rumor: Button down shirts are better for guys with large necks. Not true, the bulk of the button just makes the neck look larger.

Rumor: Button down collar shirts are for old guys. Not true, a button down shirt serves a purpose and can be use by either gent when appropriate.

Finally, if you do wear a button collar shirt always button the buttons! You just look sloppy if they are undone.

Form the mind of yours truly Michael Ferrera, I feel that a NO button collar is the better option when wearing a suit & tie. In a more casual environment the button collar shirt is more appropriate. Keep in mind gentlemen, & ladies who dress them, a variety of collar styles are nice to have in your wardrobe as you complete your Life...With Style!

This past Friday October 29, 2010 The Victoria Gardens Mall hosted the final round of their style competition. Earlier this year through the months of June and September contestants styled off head-to-head to create the most stylish outfit and users of @Shoptopia voted for the winners. Designer & stylist Michael Ferrera won the 2nd round that placed him in the finals with five other contestants who also won their rounds with unique style.

When talking to Michael Ferrera about his style idea for the finals he said, "...I really wanted something that would make my outfit stand out drastically, since I know the other contestants have nice style!...The rules were that I had to incorporate my style, add a current trend, and stay within the budget allowed so I thought in my mind about the outfit before I even started shopping. I really wanted to stay true to my style and not just go for the win with a bunch of trends...and (While nodding his head) I definitely feel like I did that in what I call an "Elegant Swaggeristic" outfit! (Michael chuckles)

Congrats to Mr. Ferrera and check out Victoria Gardens Project Style! Thank you all for the continued support, blog views, and comments! It is always a pleasure to blog about the exciting things happening in fashion & style.
You may have seen in a recent Ferrera Fresh Tip: Fashion is what you wear, Style is how you wear it!

I've recently been getting a ton of emails on shirt styles. What type to wear? What collar styles to choose? Whats "in"? Among others.

This timeless question will always remain but the most important thing when choosing shirts off-the-rack or custom made is a good fit. Find a brand that fits your body type and stick with it. The new hot brand won't work for you if it doesn't design to your body type. Remember that just as your suits can be tailored to your body, so can your dress shirts. Take your over sized, box shaped dress shirts to a good tailor that can have them cut and shaped to your body. The shirt will feel better and not look like you're just wearing a puffy pillow case with a collar on it. Try tailoring your shirts, it works!

When choosing collar styles for men's dress shirts, rather than going with whats "in", use the collar to compliment the shape of your face and body type. The wider spread collar has recently become more popular at the time of this print, but it doesn't work for every guy. For slim gentleman it may be better to go with a wider spread collar. This allows your shoulders and face to look a bit broader, giving a nice even appearance to your slim body. Just the opposite, for larger gentleman a medium spread or more narrow spread collar may be a better fit. It allows for a more narrow sharp image in round shoulders and facial features. When in doubt on what to choose its best to ask a professional for tips or go with a medium spread collar which is about 3'' apart from point-to-point. (See image to the right)

As for style of shirt such as french cuffs, plaids or stripes we'll save that for another post. But choose your fit and collar styles wisely to compliment your "Life...With Style!"
Stay true to your style by picking and choosing which fashion trends to wear this season...

It's in! After the season's showings at MAGIC, MRket and a tons of other fashion shows this Summer in Las Vegas we now know the items and trends that will be in the stores and boutiques for Autumn/Winter 2010. To save you time on looking into countless magazines, watching senseless sitcoms & movies to find the latest fashion trends, just stay close to "Life...With Style" by Michael Ferrera and we'll keep you covered.

Recently GQ online posted over 200 snapshots of the top trends in male fashion for the upcoming 2010 Fall season. Many of which were seen at MAGIC, Project, Pool, and MRket trade shows in August '10 by yours truly. A full view of the shots are below for you to look at, grab ideas, or take tips when you're ready but here's the "Ferrera Fresh" rundown of the notable trends to consider or not consider

1. For your suits gents, the slimmer suit lapel is still holding its ground as one of the looks to go for when choosing your suits.

2. The plaid neckties are still in as well. Not really the coolest thing to be wearing now since everyone is doing it, but nonetheless it's still a popular trend. Try not to wear this look more than twice a month.

3. Surprisingly the boat shoe that we talked about (in this post here) is continuing to be worn in the fall! Now it is like a mid-high boot style boat shoe in navy, green or tan that's worn dressed casual with tailored jeans and a blazer. A very cool look try it!

4. Flannel! Oooh, yes, I like! From full over coats, to simple blazers, ties, socks and other accessories, flannel is definitely a Fall trend 2010 to be used in your wardrobe this Fall gents.

5. Lace-up boots are another notable mention and I'm not complete with this look. It's cool for some gents but it looks very ol'-school-vintage-military. Not the coolest look if a girl will think you're leaving for the military next week.

6. The toggle coat is in and is Certified "Ferrera Fresh!" Although we may not get that cold on the west coast, it is for sure a piece for east coast gents to have and others to travel with.

7. Whoaaa! Graphic knit sweaters are in? Didn't see too much of this coming for the season. It looks kind of 'kid-ish' for a grown man to be wearing in 2010 but if you do wear this just wear confidence. I may try a few out and let you all know the response from the ladies.

8. The plaid suit or what GQ calls: shadow plaid....(Whatever) It's cool, try it! I have a nice amount of these styles in the Michael Ferrera Collection this season as well. It's Hot!

Other notables are wide knit scarves, beanies, leather gloves and oh leather wristbands on watches rather than metal links among the other usual accessories for the Fall season. Take a look at the picture and choose what looks you like and remember just because it's 'in' doesn't mean you have to do it. That's a "Life...With Style"
Michael Ferrera

On the October issue of Beauty Come Forth magazine marking the magazine's one year anniversary, designer Michael Ferrera was selected as the wardrobe consultant for the magazines front cover!

After learning more about the magazine and meeting with Myra Wallace the Beauty Come Forth magazine Founder/Publisher/CEO, Mr. Ferrera had the perfect idea for the wardrobe that would make the anniversary issue complete! When talking with Mr. Ferrera about his styling ideas for the October issue he said,

"...The first thing that I thought of when asked to consult for the cover was, we had to make Myra the star of the issue!...I mean it's a valuable magazine, that she created, and she is worthy of the shine on the anniversary issue...So I considered colors in the male suits that would of course fit the fall season (October) and used some bright iridescent colors in the neckties for the gents to accent Myra's dress in celebration of the magazine's anniversary...I had a great time working with the BCF team and look forward to working with them again in the future."

After getting past the excitement of the anniversary issue and the handsome men on the cover in Michael Ferrera custom clothing, I did have a chance to read the issue by clicking on the page links above, to the right and left of the cover and found some very insightful information. Some topics on fashion & style, fitness & health, finance, and relationship are a few that stood out, which you may enjoy as well!

So when you have a moment take a look at Michael Ferrera Custom Clothing on the cover of the October anniversary issue of Beauty Come Forth magazine, as it is sure to fit your "Life...With Style!"

Questioner: When traditionally is it best to wear a two button suit versus a three button suit? -Gentleman | Oakland, CA

Ferrera Fresh Answer: There is no "traditionally" best. The number of buttons on a suit are completely for style, so you can choose based on personal preference! The 3 button is the classic-cant-really-go-wrong, but currently the 2 button is a little more fresh since it's lighter, simple, chic and professional all in one...

Questioner: What color shirt would you recommend with a white linen suit for a wedding? Very casual, I'm wearing sandals. - Gentleman | Santa Monica, CA

Ferrera Fresh Answer: Color shirt! Something bright like teal, bright pink, or royal blue dress shirt. If the sandals have brown in it, a shirt with tan or brown is fresh too.

Questioner: What is "corporate casual?" -Gentleman | Rancho, CA

Ferrera Fresh Answer: "Technically" there's no such thing! This was started as a way to just dress casual, but it depends on the event. Polo's, slacks or slacks, shirt and a blazer often work. The main thing is you can ditch the neck tie.

Remain fresh you all and live Life with Style!

Always share good information with other people...

Wow, in doing research and always advancing knowledge on style, fashion, etiquette, chivalry or just simple greatness, I stumble upon a great article at AskMen.com titled: Dress Your Age 30s! After a short chuckle the article was read and in fact there is some good information for the gentleman that is at the crossroads of "Am I still cool or now a corporate professional?"

This article at AskMen.com gives some good insight on simple ways for the gentleman advancing in his life and career to also advance his style. This is for the gent that doesn't need to bar hop every weekend with the boys, is probably someones boss in the office and reads a good book every so often. Although all of us may not need the tips, grab some of them and share the information with someone else in a subtle way. You can do this by posting a link on your own Facebook wall or ReTweeting it to your Twitter followers, you might be helping someone, try it.

Nonetheless, check the article and as said before in a Ferrera Fresh Tip: ...never compromise your cool for the corporate world, combine the two and keep it "corporate-cool," that's Life...With Style!

Gentleman, there are almost two or three different occasions throughout the year that we for sure need to grab a beautiful bouquet of flowers for that special lady in your life. Among those days are Valentines Day, a birthday and anniversaries if you're lucky enough to be married. Not to mention, that you can send flowers for no reason at all, which ladies absolutely love! So when these days begin to come close there is no need for you to be running around, searching the Internet, and calling multiple stores looking for a some flowers. It is much more beneficial and convenient to find one or two florist that you know personally that also know you. Yes, cost is a factor but in the long run a "relationship" with a local florist will be more cost effect by getting favors and discounts because you're a regularly customer. In addition, when you call, pick up or have your flowers delivered you have the confidence of knowing your flowers are going to look good for that special lady! (or ladies if you're single, just kidding...but not really)

Remember, ladies (plural), does not have to mean a lady you're dating! We all may have mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, clients or friends that are deserving of an occasional flower arrangement. There also may be occasions, good and not so good, throughout the year that flowers are appropriate. Such occasions are sending a "Get Well" bouquet for someone that is ill, a bouquet for a friend after a passing in their family, or a generous "Thank You" bouquet as a kind gesture. All these yearly events will allow you build a positive relationship with your local florist which will be handsomely rewarding to you as a gentleman in many different ways! ;o)

That's Life...With Style!
Yours truly,
